At-Home Ketamine Treatment: Risks Patients Should Know
At-home ketamine treatment can be convenient, but in-clinic IV ketamine offers continuous medical monitoring, real-time infusion adjustments, and immediate emotional support. These safeguards can make treatment more comfortable, personalized, and responsive to each patient’s needs.
Ketamine therapy has offered new hope to many people who have not found sufficient relief from traditional treatments. It has been studied most extensively for treatment-resistant depression, and randomized clinical research has found meaningful antidepressant effects from certain subanesthetic doses of intravenous ketamine.
The concern with at-home ketamine is not that ketamine treatment itself should be feared. The more important question is where treatment takes place, how the medication is administered, and who is available to help if the experience does not go as planned.
At-home programs may appear private and convenient, but convenience is only one part of treatment. In-person ketamine infusion therapy provides medical oversight, responsive dosing, and human support during every stage of the experience.
Is At-Home Ketamine Treatment Safe?
Ketamine can temporarily affect blood pressure, heart rate, coordination, perception, awareness, and emotional state. Many of these effects are expected and manageable when treatment is provided in an appropriate clinical environment.
At-home ketamine programs often require patients to monitor themselves with a blood pressure cuff and have a friend or family member nearby. Some also provide access to remote clinical assistance. These precautions can be helpful, but they are not equivalent to having a trained medical professional physically present.
The U.S. Food and Drug Administration has warned patients and healthcare professionals about compounded ketamine products used for psychiatric conditions. The FDA has identified potential concerns including sedation, dissociation, changes in blood pressure, respiratory depression, psychiatric reactions, misuse, and urinary symptoms.
Ketamine is FDA-approved as an anesthetic, but its use for psychiatric conditions is off-label. This is true whether ketamine is administered at home or in a clinic. The primary difference is not simply its regulatory status—it is the level of supervision, dose control, and support available during treatment.
At-Home Ketamine Lacks In-Person Monitoring
Professional monitoring does more than collect numbers from a device. A trained provider can interpret changes in vital signs, observe a patient’s level of consciousness, recognize an unusual psychological response, and determine whether an intervention is needed.
A consensus statement published in JAMA Psychiatry emphasizes the importance of monitoring cardiovascular function, respiratory status, consciousness, and behavioral changes during ketamine treatment. It also highlights the need for clinicians who can respond to medical or psychiatric complications.
At Mind Body Centers, patients are not left to navigate the experience alone. During an in-person ketamine infusion, a trained medical professional continuously monitors heart rate, respiration, blood pressure, comfort, and response to treatment.
This level of oversight allows patients to focus on the therapeutic experience rather than worrying about interpreting their own vital signs or deciding whether a reaction is serious.
IV Ketamine Allows Real-Time Treatment Adjustments
One of the most important differences between at-home ketamine and IV ketamine infusion therapy is control over medication delivery.
With a tablet, lozenge, nasal product, or self-administered injection, the dose generally cannot be taken back once it has been absorbed or injected. A remote provider may change the dose before a future session, but that does not alter what is already happening during the current treatment.
An IV infusion delivers ketamine gradually. When clinically appropriate, the infusion can be slowed, paused, adjusted, or stopped based on the patient’s response. This gives the care team more control when a treatment feels too intense, produces uncomfortable side effects, or is not progressing optimally.
Individual responses to ketamine can vary. Health changes, medications, sleep, anxiety, previous treatment response, and personal sensitivity may all influence the experience. Real-time responsiveness can therefore be an important part of personalized ketamine care.
Emotional Support Improves the Treatment Experience
Ketamine may temporarily produce dissociation, altered perception, emotional vulnerability, or a feeling of being disconnected from the body or surroundings. These effects are not automatically dangerous, but they can feel unfamiliar or overwhelming.
A friend or family member may provide comfort during an at-home session. However, that person may not know how to distinguish an expected experience from significant psychological distress.
At Mind Body Centers, a Patient Care Provider remains available throughout the infusion. Patients can receive reassurance, grounding, conversation, comfort measures, or medication support when appropriate. This one-on-one approach to ketamine therapy helps create an environment in which patients feel seen, supported, and safe.
Emotional care is not separate from clinical care. For many patients, knowing that an experienced person is present makes it easier to relax and engage with treatment.
What Does the Mindbloom Ketamine Study Show?
A 2026 Mindbloom-affiliated study examined records from patients participating in an at-home, telehealth-supported subcutaneous ketamine program. The study reported that more than 80% of participants in several diagnostic groups achieved the researchers’ definition of a minimally clinically important improvement after six sessions.
These results are encouraging, but they should be interpreted carefully.
The study was retrospective and observational. It did not include a placebo group or another treatment group for comparison. Without a comparison group, the research cannot determine how much improvement was caused by ketamine itself rather than expectations, coaching, other treatments, natural symptom changes, or the additional support included in the program.
The authors acknowledged that the study could not establish that the at-home program was superior to other treatments.
The study also disclosed that three authors were Mindbloom employees and three were contractors who had received consulting fees from Mindbloom. Financial relationships do not automatically invalidate a study, but independent research is important when evaluating company-affiliated treatment claims.
Three serious adverse events were reported: one psychotic episode considered likely related to ketamine treatment and two deaths by suicide during the treatment period. The researchers could not determine whether the deaths were caused by or related to treatment.
It would be inaccurate to claim that in-person treatment would certainly have prevented either death. However, these events reinforce the importance of careful screening, early-treatment monitoring, crisis planning, and immediate access to trained support when treating people with serious mental health conditions.

At-Home Ketamine Treatment FAQs
Is IV ketamine better than at-home ketamine?
The best setting depends on the patient’s medical history and individual needs. IV ketamine offers several clinical advantages, including continuous monitoring, predictable medication delivery, real-time infusion control, and immediate access to trained medical and emotional support.
Why is in-person monitoring important during ketamine treatment?
Ketamine can temporarily affect blood pressure, heart rate, awareness, perception, and emotional state. In-person monitoring allows a trained professional to recognize changes, interpret symptoms, reassure the patient, adjust treatment when appropriate, and respond promptly to an unexpected reaction.
Where can I receive monitored ketamine infusion therapy?
Mind Body Centers provides personalized ketamine infusion therapy in Gilbert, Arizona, and Burnsville, Minnesota. Patients can schedule a free consultation to discuss their symptoms, treatment history, safety considerations, and whether in-clinic ketamine therapy may be appropriate.
